Workbook: Introduction to organic principles
Defining Organic Horticulture
Organic growing is a sustainable approach to growing that uses natural methods to promote a complete, healthy, and productive growing environment.
The International Federation of Organic Movement's (IFOAM 2008) official definition for organic growing is as follows:
"...a production system that sustains the health of soils, ecosystems, and people.
It relies on ecological processes, biodiversity and cycles adapted to local conditions,
rather than the use of inputs with adverse effects.
Organic Agriculture combines tradition, innovation, and science to
benefit the shared environment and promote fair relationships and good quality of life for all involved."
As we can see, prioritising our soil, employing sustainable methods and working in harmony with our local environment for the benefit of all are defining aspects of organic growing.
At Garden Organic, we think an additional useful way to describe organic growing is as follows:
'Common sense practical growing that makes best use
of our resources and works with nature'.
