Workbook: Introduction to organic principles
Organic organisations
Understanding who the key organic organisations are, and their roles can be useful when seeking advice on a range of topics, for example how aspects of organic growing are regulated. Below are some key bodies and organisations to be aware of.
Organic Research, Education and Advocacy Organisations
Garden Organic/Henry Doubleday Research Association
Garden Organic promotes organic growing and composting, citizen science and research, and seed conservation through our Heritage Seed Library.
The Organic Research Centre
The ORC works alongside farmers to improve the uptake, efficiency and development of organic farming and agroecological practices
The Organic Growers Alliance
The OGA is a peer to peer support network of growers, farmers and horticulturalists.
International Federation of Organic Agriculture Movements
IFOAM is a membership-based organization working to bring true sustainability to agriculture across the globe.
Organic Certification & Control Bodies
Where produce is grown, labelled, and commercially sold as 'organic', it must comply with specific regulations. A number of control bodies such as the Soil Association regulate and certify organic growing in the UK overseen by DEFRA.
A list of the current DEFRA approved UK control bodies is available online.
