Why make compost?

   

  
Home-made compost can save you money by acting as a perfect soil improver, fertiliser and mulch in one. You may have heard of 'no-dig' gardening already, where the soil is covered (mulched) with a large amount of organic matter like home-made compost, leafmould, well-rotted manure, green waste compost or even bagged peat-free compost over time to create a rich soil to grow in. It's an excellent way to clear a weed-infested growing area and avoids disrupting the soil life through excessive digging. This is important to micro-organisms, fungi and worms and helps feed plant roots too.

Homemade compost:

  • improves soil structure by lightening and breaking up heavy soils and bulking up light sandy soil
  • improves water retention of soils
  • feeds plants and other vital soil organisms
  • helps control diseases
