Roguing out

Descriptor sheet

Roguing is a word that simply means removing any undesireable plants and only saving seed from the very best examples.

Roguing takes place throughout the growing life of your plants, for example, remove any plants that look sickly or have different foliage to the rest, or any that produce tomatoes that differ from the rest of the crop. Are these plants the best examples of the variety you are growing for seed?

At the Heritage Seed Library we refer to the information we have about the variety when roguing. This ensures that we save seed only from the best plants and those that will continue to grow "true-to-type" for each new generation.

You now know the best way to grow and care for your tomatoes when growing for seed. In the next section we'll look at the best way to harvest and save tomato seeds.
