Getting started with growing

Choosing plants for your growing space is one of the most enjoyable parts of gardening. There are a few golden rules which are important to remember:
- Grow fruit and vegetables that you like to eat and will use.
- Grow plants that suit your conditions. Think about how sunny your site is and your soil type, and match this to which plants will thrive in those conditions.
- Mix up your planting. Add some flowers to attract pollinators and remember that diverse planting can help to confuse pests.
Finally make notes about where you grow different crops and always move them around year on year to prevent the build up of diseases in the soil. This is called crop rotation and is a great way to support your soil health.
