Making your own mixes is definitely the most sustainable option.
It has the advantages that

  • It re-uses material on site
  • There is no transportation of bulky materials to be processed
  • No plastic packaging
  • You know exactly what has gone into it

In reality, most people do not have enough raw materials on their site to provide for all their composting needs. However by making some of your own mixes, and perhaps mixing it with shop bought, you can reduce the environmental impact of processing and transporting bulky materials, and reduce those compost miles!
